India vs Bharath!

I was in hyderabad last week for a series of meeting and was in the outskirts. It was a beautiful campus with lotsa greenery. One was always tempted to go for an early morning walk and yes, Hyd was pleasant, surprisingly! As always one would try and find a chai shop for the shubh aarambh. so did I right outside the campus on the road side..an oriya lady running it! I with my tootie frootie hindi conveyed to her that i wud need a black tea without sugar (ofcourse with out milk) and light! she smiled and made it for me with all patience..what in the morning, another vessel and all new efforts for 1 cup..
and then she did give me a good one and i was happy..
so when i asked her what was the cost, she smiled again..i said what? and she said, what money? go..what do i charge for water? ok, hot water at that!
i had to force the payment..
But see the attitude..early morning, extra efforts and no expectation!
Thats the real Bharath- working with the heart!
In India - ur developed urban that is, they would have asked for 25/- atleast without batting an eye lid..no, i dont want free lunch, still!
and this is not the 1st time..it has happened twice before..once in some remoe village in TN and another in karnataka..
thats the difference!
India vs bharath that is ladies and Gmen!

once back in madras have loads to do..

so no promises on when more stories come..but there are many for sure..

Hyderabad was hot! and the food out there even hot...phew, my stomach had to really fight heavy to cope up with the spicy (tasty though) food out there..
Chennai was too when I left..In all Bangalore still is better inspite of the traffic woes..

Osama Bin laden dead! or is it?

so one of the most dreaded terrorist in world has been killed by the creator themselves..
by the CIA that is..

and poor Pakistan, as we all know they are so short sighted, couldnt see Osama walk around 1.5 hours from their capital.

Good..but now the fun starts..
who is better?
- Americans who thought Paks were their ally?
- terrorists who, rightly, thought they were ruling pakistan and so nothing can happen to osama or who ever had a bomb?
- ISI who were throwing mud in to all eyes?

and then to see who defends whom and who pulls down whom..
for eg Pervez is already saying its a shame US carried out an operation in their land!! ha ha..who? Pervez!!

already lotsa noises all round about how this could have been carried out- with or without pak army or ISI!!

but the most funny noise was being made about no phone connection or internet in Osama's Bungalow! hey, why does he need it when he can just walk in to that pak Army institute and make all calls and browsing with high security- i mean firewalls and all!

and as always with US- conspiracy theories are on already!
(remember they have fantastic conspiracy theories on moon landing to 9/11 to everything!)

This and that..

have been traveling for the last weeks..immediately after that organic mela in Chennai, I went to OOty (yes, that beautiful organic tea story is coming soon), Coimbatore, Tiruchengode etc..the last week was in orissa! was on a fact finding tour - reg the hybrid invasion in East esp in Orissa and checking on the Monsanto juggernaut..had lots to learn from that inimitable KK..lotsa learning, lotsa travel, lots to document now..
an official report wud come and then a personal post and insight from my view point also to feature here soon..

meanwhile- I know that the whole nation was very busy with wars esp shown live..like the one last week between India and Pakistan was nauseating..all channels, all talk shows, all and sundry just devouring that one item..oh man! the very few times i had access to TV showed how much these TV channels had nothing else to cover..dunno how all of you just could go thru such a grind for so many days..
whole nation immersed in cricket..now in the glory..am happy that for the next 28 years u all can have a new footage:-0

In my home state TN, there is lot of fun happening..iam sad that am not there during this build up to the election..but its nauseating out there too..with so many freebies by each of the parties..from next time on there could be some competitions run to come out with wild ideas to offer for freebies..

pleasant Madras

It has been really pleasant out here and that means the ear buffs, mufflers, monkey caps and blankets are out in Chennai:-)
All those camouflage (fauji type) ear muffs are funny- esp when one gets to see them adorned at 10am in the morning!
There has been severe rains this year and if all these are bcos of climate change, hey, isn’t that welcome? But I dread to think of summer, hmm..

This and that..

Hectic days..many hospital days in the last weeks (grand mother, father for cataract, such like - nothing serious) travel, planning for the soon-to-happen long travel..
All this means blogging takes the first beating..infact my mail access itself has been way low in last weeks..so apologies, inconvenienced regretted and all that!

Meanwhile lots of interesting things (many shameful ones included) happened around..
Worst of it all was the IMA getting in to a controversy bcos of endorsing a wrong product. As it is Indian Medical Assn is the only assn in the world to endorse commercial products. And to add more sham to this shame, they have endorsed wrongly! Misleading ordinary folks.
sample here.
They also got bashed up recently for the complain endorsement too apart from this Tropicana and Quacker oats!!
I also want some one to knock the *dash* off the dental assn which keeps endorsing colgate and other carcinogenic pastes..yeah, while on this, avoid any paste that foams up. It aint good at all.

Restore is organizing a community meet program on the 19th sep 2010. More info on the website. if you are in Chennai kindly RSVP and do attend it.

Amidst all this, W & me went to Point return and spent 3 days out there. As always its fun being there and working there infuses so much energy. Else where I had mentioned "Each time it grows on us, in all sense..as a project, as an idea, as a farm and as a rocking oxygen supplier/ body-mind revitaliser.." In the recent past, arrival of Sri & K had increased the fun factor there and now the new addition of Siddarth is a plesant bonus. if you are an IIT / IIM alumni then go settle at Point return;-)
seriously whats with these fellas? The 2 of the 1st 3 settlers out there are IIT, IIM fellas..

Finally, am joining the Kisan Swaraj yatra – a bus tour of 20 states, 12500 kms in 3 months..thats from Oct2nd..am really excited..much of my time these days goes with planning for that trip! Will come back with more stories and loads of experience..i cant wait..can u?

old farts and young minds

man! meeting old friends is great, always.
we had the 25 years 'whatever'jubilee alumni meet of our college guys..
oh! man!! all old farts now.. its 25 years since we all stepped in to the college first! (mind u not finished, many were wondering why it was 25 so soon)
In a matter of few minutes all these old farts scaled down 2 decades so easily and all were back to same old form..pulling each other's leg at the slightest chance and recalling (conveniently) others' goofs in our hey days and feigning memory loss when ever pointed their own goof ups:-)

the funny part was, all but 3 profs/lecturers there is none left from old days..another proof of days gone past..hmm..but we all proved we are young u know- by dancing, talking thru the night and laughing all the way/day..

Beware!

The whole world will sing eulogies on Muthiah Murlidharan and make u believe he is some (bowling) god!
Don’t get fooled/sold. Its humbug.
He was a cheat, after all..
Remember one used to get “medical certificates” from ‘doctors’ to ‘prove’ one was ‘rea;;y’ ill to save from punishment at school!
That’s what he did.. get a medical certificate and beat the rule. What a shame..if u r handicapped, go play handicap cricket is what the cricket admin shud have told him!
But unfortunately Dalmia was ruling..all he had was votes in mind, so amended a rule to help such foulsters like Murli, Shoaib chuktar etc.
The fall out is evident..
I see lotsa kids bowling with a big pause, literally side arm throw and trying to justify quoting murali..similarly lotsa younsters chuck for pace..
Anyways since its criket, I dont mind its detoriation..still it’s a shame..
So don’t get fooled..Its not worth all those paeans..
Just ignore..may be, something good can come from media sometime later.

Train pearl

when some one delivers some very note worthy comment or view, in tamil we say "muthu uthirthar" meaning, he just delivered (or spilled) a pearl!

I was travelling by a day train back from CBE the other day and as usual u strike a conversation..so a bunch of us got together and were talking about the biiig scandals and biig loots by politicos..
Its then, I said the obvious- WTF will these guys do with 1000s of crores,eh? Is money everything? What if there is no water, no good air or even food for their next gen?

Am sure we all have wondered something like this and immly guys we are talking wud nod and obviously support this..
But for once a guy next to me differed..
And he mouthed something very funny and meaningful I heard in a long time..
He said that in chaste Coimbatore tamil..man! that was fundu..
He said ” if theres no water its u, me, our sons who will suffer. These guys will buy water from japan or Japan itself, send them across in huge ships all the way here and prolly bath in Japanese mineral water..so their 1000s of crores helps..so never again wonder what these K* will do with money”
Phew..i was out for a few mins..1st time some one mouthed something different for the original question.

Note: man, all this came in chaste CBE tamil and with equally interesting gaalis..one of the best, unparalleled tamil gaali is K* in CBE tamil IMO. It cant be transliterated to English..what a pity..its mouthed with a big stress and typical sing song and many times in a very rhyming manner, u hardly notice it’s a gaali.

crazy coincidence..

I had to suddenly leave for blore 2 nights back and since the decision itself was thrusted on me late that evening, I had to rush to Koyembedu bus stand and take a bus. It was the last bus that night and I got in happy thinking I will reach Blore early next day to attend to my tasks..
oops, a minor accident, big show down between drivers, police etc and i had to jump in and offer 'kattai panchayat" and after some 3 hours our bus left..But that story will come to you later, in a couple of days.

Now to this funny crazy coincidence.

From that bus, I suddenly hopped off at chule circle (instead of the predetermined Hudson circle)..Now that I was popular after that mid nights 'show down(katta panchayat) people jumped to help me..driver immly stopped to ease me out..after all that i suddenly felt why did i suddenly jump out here..ok, it was really late and any amount of time save was good..still!

There was this guy who travelled in the same bus who had got down at the same stop as planned. He asks me where i needed to go and I said "dairy circle". i said so bcos i normally dont say the place where my BIL lives bcos most dont recognise that place. This fellow immly says 'even Iam going that side, where there?' and I said "its near that, taverekere" and he jumps 'what? me too'..i cudnt believe, i said its taverekere main road..and he says 'me too'..
then I say "near that banyan tree.." and he says 'hey, thats too much, i live 4 buildings away from that tree'..
so what? me, as always trigger happy to avoid going solo in auto (if not for time, i wud have bussed generally) jumps at his suggestion of going in the same auto..

now, we need to go thru the regular small talk aint? so where r u working? so where from madras? bla bla..
"oh, u work here at blore? so u went to visit ur parents is it"
and suddenly he says ' hmm..actually my thatha is in madras but my parents are actually in ..'
"in????"
'in Neyveli'

what???Neyveli??
hmm, how crazy can it go? taverekere to neyveli? then it comes out that he studied in the same school as me..
I tell him " hey dont tell me u r my brother like in some S.V;Sekar drama;-)"
it turns out he was in my school but some 15 years later..
His father worked in the same public sector as my father..

that was like unbelievable..it went on and there were so many crazy similarities like he is called by the same(nick) name at home!
The way it all got unfolded was simply crazy and unbelievable..

moi on Radio- 105.6 FM

Through my good friend and blogger(oops, is it ex-blogger nos going by the frequency at which he blogs these days) Thennavan, I was called by Gyanvani- a community FM radio channel under the All India Radio. This is being broadcast today, saturday, april 10th at 7.35pm. There is a repeat 2moro, sunday morning at 7.40am.
This was free wheeling interview on Organic farm, farmer, produce etc..
It was nice interview..
Those of u who can, try and listen..
ofcourse give me a feedback of what should I have included or changed or not said..
otherwise, it was a fun experience for me and so just to share my fun, u listen.

BTW they gave me an envelope when I left and I was so eager to see that, which I could only after I was out of their campus. It was a cheque for Rs.400/-!!!! my only earning since I returned back to india 4 years back! nice feeling, eh!

Gopi manjuri

Guess that?
That’s gobi Manchurian! That’s what was written on a big board outside a take away in Blore outskirts..chop that manchurian race with spelling and miming their cuisine;-)
But such is the fun of traveling by bus thru far outskirts in any town..
This was when I traveled by bus from kengeri to BTM via uttarahalli..
Oh that’s a nostalgic route for me.. one and half decades back that was my route to go to Mysore road from south of blore..that too with Royal Enfield Bullet, my first girl friend! That used to be a lush route with so much greenery and less buildings.. today its inverse..more concrete than green..still a better scene than coming thru the regular route.
As I am devouring my nostalgic memories, I hear some interesting dialogues from my back…(again buses are fun to eavesdrop)
1: Hey, see this..so many new houses..
2: no use man.none will buy solar heaters, useless houses..
1: see there, that’s one telugu person’s house..i installed..
2: so many houses, I thought we shud go there..why u say they wont buy?
(aha! Some sales/service guys..i cudnt stop smiling..then they drag on about their market, problems etc)
so as I go back to old memories and the scene now another bright name board attracts my attention..
it says ‘Drink & drive’..
whattt? I glance back to see it’s a fruit juice shop:-)
so much for the fun derived from bus trips..and its ecofriendly too…

want a state?

All those who want a separate state, come fall in line on the right..

as for those who are opposed to such new states, pl fall in line on the left..

No! you cant form the left line first anticipating a statehood request..thats not allowed.

oh! more fun awaits, guys...what with aspiring leaders within each ruling family, these elder politicos can probably just split states and bequeath to the warring wards..how nice,eh?

for those of you to whom this fun isnt enough..go grab news on Tiger woods! ha ha..latest is Accenture is also splitting from him:-) did u ever think infidelity costs so much? so what will Accenture say now? wasnt that high performance delivered, multiply?? poor guys..they need to come up with something really innovative.

some change, eh?

One of the serious mails (left over from my professional days) that I received recently said this:
1800 new projects were added during Jul- Sep 09
25 were Cement projects, 58 Steel projects, 28 Textiles projects,
54 Thermal & 41 Hydel Power projects, 878 Roadways project,
152 Water Supply Schemes
106 Commercial Complexes and 301 Real Estate projects.

Oops said my mind..my heart bleeds..what a catastrophe says my brain..how much pollution, how much effluents, how many more tonnes of carbon di oxide? how many more lives??
Hm, what a change in a few years, eh?

Compounder and a generational shift!

Heard of this word - compounder?
Wikipedia doesn’t even recognize this word!
The free dictionary says this.
Regulars here know that I come from a small town (oh! Yeah that heaven of a place called Neyveli. Ok, if u ignore that environmental disaster its mines was, it was heaven in many ways. The best part was >300 trees per head!)

There in that cute small town, you have to head to one corner for all ailments. GH!! Join a big queue bcos half the town and those ill from 18 villages around will only land up there and collect a slip to the ‘directed’ ward and there again sit on the long benches and wait perennially for ur turn to meet the doctor. Oh! Those long waits, the humming big fans above (How did they ever keep the regulator, if any, in 0.25 or lesser? And do you call it running still?), big chats of all diseases all round, and sudden spurts of actions- every one will rise and move 1-2 inches towards the doctor's door, every few minutes..The best part is one needs to bunk school for sure bcos no one ever went there early and got back in time for school:-)

Coming to the matter, atlast u get to sit in front of the doctor who is already tired of seeing so many patients and prolly the same symptoms as u. So he urges u to move fast with a scribbled prescription. Come on! Don’t try to read that, u can never decipher it.
Here enters our hero.
So u rush to that small window (or the ulta “U” hole in the wall) and flash your paper.
Its only this compounder who can decipher that and then in a swift move will take a cut paper and pour some powder and fold it in to a neat packet. If you are lucky this powder could be colourful! But more colors follow if you have been prescribed some syrup..oh! I know lots of them ask for the doc to write a syrup – all rose, pink and jarring colors. The more colorful it is, you get well soon- goes the local folklore..
If you had gone for some skin ailment, hmm, u had it. Poor you. All u get is a slimy jell like colorless substance. yes, that would stink too. You apply it and whole town knows you went for some skin problem to the GH. But even that is packed in 2 small pieces of paper by this compounder fella. Actually thinking back you always had stuff only in paper or bottles. How lovely and ecofriendly my upbringing has been:-)
But we never thought for a second what was given..None of us knew.. these stuff were all called APC, PPC, PP4 injection, Kalimbu and what not..
So this Compounder fellow was the king mixing away to glory.
If you pan over from the kid’s view of amazement of his job at the hospital, its even more incredible.
Say there is an emergency or just some high fever or suchlikes in the evenings, the townwalas never ran to the GH..they just call this Compounder and this man will come with his stylish leather bag in a cycle and mix something, then pick up one injection and insert and collect the pennies and run..all this he would merrily do till late night. Prolly all the input was flicked from the GH including the syringes (oh! Those days they were (re)used till they wouldn’t even enter even the cotton bunch).
There was one compounder in the other end of the town who would ‘put injection’ for all ‘rohas’ and so was the most popular and so became richer by the day and slowly progressed to a 2nd hand Lambretta and upwards..

I was suddenly thinking of this Compounder yesterday- as a word and as a job its not seen these days, but only people from my generation and before understand.
NO! may be my grandfather wudnt..

That set me to thinking more..My grandfather had never visited that GH (for that matter any hospital) and when he was seriously sick (almost all knew it was his time and so dutifully wanted him to part from the GH, which was the norm those days) too he objected to going to hospital or consuming medicnes..”che englishkaaran maruntha yevan saapduvan” used to be his regular retort when ever he used to have these small niggles..
But he did have his own treatments..he wud squeeze a lemon (plucked fresh from the garden- oh yeah, each house in Neyveli had so many trees) in to his eyes so casually or he would just squeeze tulsi or some erukkan leaves on some injury or rub aloe vera on cut wounds or cloves to be ‘adakified’ inside ur mouth for hours or such like..
Ok, I didn’t value that and so like lots of other special, traditional talents he had these also went to the grave (that’s for another day).
But This man hasn’t gone or seen the compounder and so not those chemicals- powder or injection or syrup or what ever..

So where did we lose this war?
Do you get it?
Like in many things, my previous generation that of my parents lost:-(
In the guise of development or Englishman’s way or science or just aping the west, it’s the previous generation that lost it all..and ofcourse we also followed it blindly..

Do you really get that?
